This shop stands within easy access of Okurayama station. Honestly, I passed this shop and returned then I found this shop. It’s really close to the station.

I ordered “Minazuki” which is a seasonal sweet. “Minazuki” is the traditional name of the month of June in Japanese traditional calendar.

In Kyoto, there is a habit of eating this “Minazuki” on June 30th for praying for good health and removing the uncleanness over the past six months.

This sweet is normally formed the shape of triangle. According to one theory, this triangle is formed by cutting square into half to symbolize half year. It is topped with red beans because red color is used for greater purification.

I was impressed the world of Japanese sweet. It’s very profound!!

Apart from the history, let’s talk about the tastes. It was chewy and delicious. The main part is made by UIRO. “UIRO is a traditional Japanese steamed cake made of rice flour and sugar. It is chewy, similar to mochi, and subtly sweet. (excerpt from Wikipedia)”
